Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Conventional medicines believes that there is no cure for PCOS and women has to manage their symptoms life-long with hormonal pills and other treatment methods.  At Amruth Ayurvedic Center, our Ayurvedic doctor Dr. Vibhuti Rao, regularly treats women diagnosed with PCOS. Remember one thing- Ayurveda help you understand and manage your PCOS better. We do not call it PCOS, it is a western medicines' diagnosis and what ever information you are getting on this website is only for your understanding. Its like converting Sanskrit to English- we do not get correct meaning. Similarly converting Ayurvedic diagnosis into western one, does not help us and moreover confuse us. So for you it is PCOS, for us it could be Vata imbalance or Pitta or Kapha imbalance and much more.

How do Ayurveda treat PCOS?

Although no single disease explained in Ayurvedic text books perfectly correlate with the modern concept of PCOS, our ancient scholars have given various descriptions of the possible diseases which can closely stand with the modern point of view of PCOS. Moreover, women’s menstrual cycle is a healthy indicator of her balanced health. As within Ayurveda textbooks menstruation cycle is seen as purificatory process where a women’s body gets cleansed every month when she has her periods.

Ayurveda is very unique medical system which has few grounding principles. Such as is the foundation of ‘Dosha’ principle in diagnosing and treating a disease . According to Ayurveda, PCOS is not a single disease but a group of disorder which involves imbalance between all the tri doshas, dhatu, agni and mala. This can be further understood in terms of Artava dushti and Yoni Vyapad. Thus, all three doshas play important & distinctive role in the production, development, maturation & release of ovum & therefore the ovarian cycle & menstrual cycle is under control of three doshas . Apart from them, Sthula purusha (obese person) in ashtanindiya (censurable person) described by Acharya Charak as 8 faults which include polyuria, polydipsia and short life. This condition may simulate with hyper insulinemia condition. Atiloma person with excessive hair and growth is also censurable people are the two conditions may indicate female afflicted with PCOS.

Kapha predominance manifests as increased weight, subfertility, hirsutism, diabetic tendencies and coldness. Pitta predominance manifests as hair loss, acne, painful menses, clots and heart problems. Vata predominance manifests with painful menses, scanty or less menstrual blood and severe menstrual irregularity.

Lifestyle modification-healthy diet and regular physical activity , focus on weight loss if overweight  are the two concepts many researcher have highlighted in the management of PCOS considering it as a lifestyle disorder. Further, it is now believed that prevention of PCOS is possible by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

One of the main goal of Ayurveda-as explained by Shushruta Acharya, is to prevent disease by adopting various Ayurveda concept of daily routine, seasonal routine, concept of food and other concepts.
