PANCHAKARMA

The five bio-purification treatments: vamana (emesis), virechana (purgation), nasya (nasal instillation of herbal oils/powders), basti or vasti (herbal enema), and raktamokshana (bloodletting). These procedures are commonly used in conjunction with allied therapies in order to cleanse the channels, eliminate toxins from the body, and restore balance.

Shodhana Chikitsa

The area of Ayurveda known as Panchakarma is a branch of Ayurveda that practices to purify the body from toxins and restore it to balance with natural law. At Amruth Ayurvedic Center we have fully established male and female Panchakarma rooms to provide classical Panchakarma therapies in Bengaluru, India.

Step 1: Purva-karma (the pre-panchakarma procedures)

a. Agni balance- First your Agni will be corrected. Agni is very important to burn all those toxins in your gut which are triggering your pain. Also, a balanced Agni is a sign of good health. So take those oral herbal mixtures given to your to balance your Agni. Any preparation is usually administered for 3 to 7 days, depending on the age, disease, and condition of the patient.

b. Snehana karma- After removing digestive toxins and seeing that there is no Agni related issues, then your body should be lubricated with ghee and oil internally (Sneha-pana)and externally (Abhyangam) to help loosen up your toxins for easy expulsions. Internally medicated ghee is given for 3 to 7 days at the break of dawn (6 to 7 AM) based on the person's constitution and digestive power (Agni and kostha).

c. Swedana Karma- Along with this, fomentation will be performed which is going to help you a lot to loosen your body toxins.  Fomentation is also useful in relieving pain, restricted movement in low back region. It can be done in entire body or in affected part of the body like only low back etc. alone.
Among the different forms of
Ayurvedic fomentation procedures, Avagaha Sweda, Pizhichil, Nadi Sweda, Patra Pinda Sweda, Pinda Sweda, and Upanaha Sweda, Kati Basti . This may also be a specific treatment for a number of disorders, especially in vata-dominant diseases where it may be a main treatment.

Step 2: The Main 5 purificatory methods

  • Vamana Karma
  • Virechana Karma
  • Basti Karma
  • Nasya
  • Raktamokshana

Vamana treatment uses the upward movement in the form of emesis to eliminate the toxins. It is a process by which the contents of the stomach including kapha and pitta dosas are expelled out of body through the mouth. It is one of the MCPs that eliminates toxic materials from upper parts of the body.

Virechana uses downward movement to remove the related toxins from the small intestine and liver through the rectum by therapeuitc purgation. It is a specific process for elimination of pitta dosa. PT procedure involves elimination of pitta dominating dosas and toxins of the body through the rectal route.

Basti treatment also uses downward movement to remove related toxins and waste material whose focal point of target is the large intestines through therapeutic enemas. It is a procedure in which medicated oils, decoctions, and decoctions with pastes of herbs or oils are introduced into the large intestines through the rectum with the help of an enema apparatus. There are hundred types of Basti explained in the classical Ayurvedic text books and many are practiced even today and have shown wonderful results primarily in the diseases of Vata imbalance such as Infertility.
Anuvasana Basti (Oil enemas)

Niruha Basti (Kashaya enemas)
Karma vasti — Total of 30 enemas, 12 decoction-based and 18 oil-based enemas administered on alternate days
Kala vasti — Total of 16 enemas, 6 decoction-based and 10 oil-based
Yoga vasti — Total of 8 enemas, 3 decoction based and 5 oil-based

The nasal administration of medication in Ayurveda is called as Nasya . An excess of body humors accumulated in the sinus , throat nose and head areas is removed through this process by the nearest possible opening which is the nose.  It refers to administration of medicines in various forms through the nostrils (i.e., instilling medicated oil in the nose or administering paste, powder, or fumes of errhine drugs in the nostrils).
Rakta mokshana is therapeutic letting of blood an exclusive purification therapy where instruments or leeches are used in completing the procedure. This therapy is used in conditions where excess toxins are carried in the blood to the periphery of the body. It is practiced to remove toxic materials in blood in blood-borne diseases; in pitta predominant diseases; and also in a few vata disorders

Step-3: Paschaat-Karma (Post-panchakrama plan)

This is as important as undergoing the main procedures. If you do not follow the guidelines after the procedures, then your efforts may go in vein. It is the follow-up therapies that include diet, medication & lifestyle. After the toxins have been effectively eliminated, patient-specific diet regimens, controlled physical effort and health-promoting natural herbal remedies will be recommended. These support and enhance the successful effects of the two previous stages of Panchakarma treatments.

Abhyagam (Oil Massage)

Ayurvedic massage, or "Abhyanga", is a part of the traditional detoxification and rejuvenation program of Ayurveda, in which the entire body is rhythmically massaged with large amounts of warm oil and herbs to remove toxins and blocks from the system. The rhythmical and deeply relaxing movements of the massage remove stagnant energy and move the prana or life force to stimulate your body's vital energy. This is very relaxing, energizing and at the same time enhances circulation throughout the body and revitalizes the lethargic Body and mind.
