Obesity as told in Ayurveda |
Obesity is nothing but accumulation of excessive fat in the body which causes adverse effects on the functional aspects of the body. In Ayurveda, obesity is called as Atisthaulya where all the three doshas are vitiated along with high Kapha vitiation.Ayurveda defines Stoulaya (obesity) as accumulation of excess bodily fat and Kapha dosha in the body. Improper ahara (diet) and vihara (lifestyle) are the two primary areas which cause Stoulya.
The main reasons for accumulation is due to a slow, stagnant and lethargic lifestyle comprising of a lack of body movement activities such as regular brisk walks and exercises. This is further aggravated by a sedentary lifestyle such as a desk based job or sleeping during the day time. Consuming foods that increase kapha dosha and excessively consuming foods tend to contribute to excessive body fat accumulation. Excess of these digested foods having madhura (sweet) vipaka (end portion of digestion) leads to a state where further dhatu (tissue) formations are arrested due to a excess influx of this Mahura vipaka circulating in the system and obstructing tissue nutrition channels. This left over Madhura vipaka and rasa dhatu then easily converts into Medha dhatu (adipose fat tissue) and gets accumulated in the body. |
