No parent can see their child suffering with attacks of Asthma and using those inhalers repeatedly. It is sad but true that in big cities the problem is very common, bigger and dangerous for children's health. Due to awareness regarding effectiveness of Ayurveda medicines, people are now turning towards Ayurveda seeking better care and relief without side effects. I (Dr. Vibhuti Rao) am writing this article to help you understand what childhood asthma is all about what Ayurveda suggest to manage it well.
Your child may be diagnosed with bronchial asthma by the modern medicine doctor if he or she had the following symptoms- –Wheezing –Breathlessness –Chest tightness –Nighttime or early morning coughing
Let me clear one thing here- we do not call it Asthma, we call it as Tamaka Swasa, which is one of type of Swasa Roga. So though it is referred as Asthma, remember we diagnose and treat on the basis of Ayurveda principles only. Modern terms are just helpful to name it.
From centuries, we have been using natural herbal and folk medicines to manage various respiratory problems such as cold, cough, sinus issues, chest pain, wheezing etc. You may be remembering your old good days when you have been given Tulasi leaves to chew for simple cough. We had Tulasi in our home. But now, rare to find it even outside home. We stand strongly close to chemicals and artificial health.
According to Ayurveda tamaka awasa occurs due to either Beej dosha (genetic) or Sahaj (acquired). So either one of the parent had suffer from the same or the child got it from external or internal environment. If it is due to genetic causes (having a history of asthma patients in the both families of parents) then this is to difficulty to treat, but Sahaj type in easy to treat.
Dosha involved- it is primarily disturbed vata and kapha doshas. Both doshas get out of balance almost simultaneously and causes Tamaka Swasa. Srotas involved- Pranavaha Srotas
Panchakaram in children to manage tamaka swasa
Snehana and Swedana- After anointing the body with sneha mixed with salt, unctuous fomentation therapies should be done like nadi sweda, prasthara sweda and sankara sweda. Swedana liquifies kapha and srotas are made mridu, by these two actions together direct the vata in its right path which is known as anulomana. Well regulated pinda sweda with sastika Sali dasamoola ksheera is well tolerated by children. It gives both benefits of snehana and swedana.
Vamana Karma Vamana is a best procedure for eliminating kapha dosha. It is well indicated in pediatric age group right from birth and also a very helpful procedure in elimination of doshas especially kapha from amasaya and urasa.
After vomiting, the secretions accumulated in the trachea due to contraction of respiratory muscles comes out lucidly in the form of expectorant.
Any left over fluid or mucous present in the oral cavity can be let out by giving ghee & rock salt for inducing vomiting.
In children vamana procedure should be done immediately with out poorva karma with mridhu oushadhi.
