Asthi dhatu- Asthivaha-srotas in Ayurveda
We diagnose your spinal & joint problems as per Ayurveda and treat it accordingly
Asthi (bone) is the hard tissue of the body which provides frame work for your body. It is 'pitrij' bhava (paternal factor). Muscles are attached with the bones through tendons and apo-neurosis. Bones from the loco-motor system with the help of muscles and ligaments around the joint. So for you body movements this is important. Asthi and majja are mentioned as Vata palce. The dominant bhuta in Vata dosha is Vayu and Akasha. Asthi is also Akasha and Vayu dominant along with prithvi bhuta.
Formation of Asthi dhatu-
According to texts of Ayurveda, Asthis are formed from the nutrients supplied by Medha dhatu through Asthivaha srothas. The nutrients in Medas dhatu which is meant to nourish asthi dhatu are processed in asthivaha srothas by dhatwagnis. Dhatwagni and bhutagni (vayu, agneya and prithvi) bring about hardness and heaviness to these nutrients which form asthi or bones.
Functions of Asthi according to Ayurveda:
In nature we observe that trees are supported by strong solid stems. Same way human body is supported by strong bones. All muscles (mamsa), tendons and ligaments are attached to asthis (bones). Asthi supports these structures and gives shape to our body.
Asthi Vriddhi Laxana:
When asthi dhatu increases more than normal , it leads to formation of adhyasthi (hypertrophy of bone) and adhidanta (formation of extra teeth).
Asthi Kshaya Laxanas:
When asthidhatu or nutrients of asthidhatu reduces the following diseases may surface.
Pathology and the Asthi Dhatu
Bone pathologies inflicted with dosha vitation.
Vata vitiation leads to weak or fragile bones that become osteoporotic and fracture easily.
Pitta vitiation leads to bone infections (osteomyelitis) and inflammation.
Kapha vitiation leads to excessively thick, dense bones.
There are disorders of Asthi such as Amavata, Sandhigata vata, Vata rakta etc.
Osteoarthritis is a combined vata-kapha condition in which vata (age, motion and stress) is responsible for provoking growth in an irregular fashion leading to bone spurs. Rheumatoid arthritis is a sannipatika condition whereby vata pushes kapha to cause irregular bone growth. Vata fans the flames of pitta causing inflammation and bone destruction due to basically presence of Ama.
